while I was away

I have returned from my holiday in our sleepy Spanish village. Usually I make a few blog posts while I am away but this year things haven't worked out.  Blogging from my iPad proved too much of a challenge (someone tell me how!! do I need an app?) and our ancient laptop was continually occupied by the 10 to 20 year olds who seem to spend life nose to screen. But most of all, this year has been busy and a bit difficult so I think I needed the break. I took lots of pictures so will be catching up with a few Spanish themed posts over the next week or so.

While I was away...
The courgettes on the allotment are still too tiny to pick - whats been going on?!
The Olympic games came and went, we watched some of it on a postcard sized TV. London looked amazing.
I was here on the lovely lottieloves blog, thank-you Charlotte!
I have a new stockist,  BooVake in Scotland, thank-you Arlene!
Here's this months horoscope illustration for  Red magazine - happy birthday Virgos!

easter break

We turned our backs on Catalonia and took a short break in the far south west this Easter. And the wind was definitely in from Africa, this wild and beautiful area of Atlantic Andalucia lived up to its reputation as the windiest corner of Spain (the right sort of wind, happy kite surfers!).  It was easy to see how the wind influences the landscape, new windmills stretch across every hillside, the pine trees are squat and rounded, the sand blown half way up the hillsides to form Sahara like dunes (as my husband pointed out not unlike Ogmore in Wales where he used to play as a child, just substitute the view of Morocco for Port Talbot steel works and there you go!)

We stayed in Vejer de la Frontera a classic Andalucian hill top village, the sparkling white streets literally swept clean by the wind and the houses closed and secret. The sparse black and white of the architecture was perked up by fragrant orange trees and tiled courtyards filled with plants, spiky or succulent to survive the chilling winds and scorching summer sun. Vejer was recovering from its Easter festivities so was very quiet during the day, just the occasional burst of Flamenco from iron barred windows.

Our home for the week was one of Vejer's most atmospheric houses tucked away under the castle walls in the oldest part of the town. This very special and beautiful house owned by photographer Christina Wilson and journalist and broadcaster Robert Elms is in parts over 1000 years old, a tiny maze of whitewashed rooms, cobbled hallways and ancient steps built around a courtyard, simply furnished with great style and charm and plenty of Spain based reading material, six days was not enough!

getaway

South London is not a good place to be in at the moment so I am very glad to be here for the next couple of weeks. Depending on the internet connection in our sleepy Catalonian village I will try to add to my blog every now and then. Happy summer everyone!

the simple life

I will be spending the next few weeks in Spain enjoying the simple life in our sleepy village while the rest of my family kite surf on the beach (this sort of crazy activity is not for me!). We have now moved into the 21st century and are connected to the internet, so I will try to make a few posts, hope it works!

christmas is coming

I am sure I should have been thinking about Christmas way back in July in order to stock my shop but life just got in the way! So now I am trying to catch up with the roddy&ginger Christmas stocking in white cotton or natural linen available here. I am also printing some Christmas cards which I have yet to put in my shop - must get a move on!

things I like about Spain 3 - recycled bus

We were very surprised when this battered old red London bus appeared at the bottom of our village. It's the offices of the local kayaking enterprise. We were promised that the two hour canoe down the River Ter was like a trip down the Orinoco. As I've never been to the Orinoco I can't make a comparison! but we had a brilliant time, and saw our part of Spain from a completely different perspective, the river is home plenty of wildlife including kingfishers, herons and to the dismay of the teenage girls -  spiders.

things I like about Spain 2 - village mural

I love this mural of the village, it has been on the wall of the old school building for as long as we have been coming here and provided the first inspiration for my spanish village prints. Every year it gets a bit more crumbly but I hope it always remains, I'll be very sad if it disappears.

things I like about Spain - La Moda

One of the many reasons to visit our nearest city, Girona. La Moda, a tiny shop that sells everything you will ever need for sewing. The shop is always busy and the service meticulously helpful so be prepared for a long wait while you take in the thousands of buttons and threads on offer. The window display is a delight, this month it was a fine display of fans.

adios

I am taking a blog break for a while, it has been an incredibly busy year so I am really looking forward to a few weeks in Spain - there will be lots of family comings and goings so it may not be too restful - but it will be fun! Just looking at these images makes me feel relaxed. I will be coming back with lots of ideas for new prints and products in September.

sardana

I've been screen-printing some of my Sardana prints. The Sardana is a traditional Catalan dance performed by young and old at village fiestas and holidays. The dancers should really be in a circle - but that didn't fit in with the composition! It is available to buy on my website and Etsy shop. The original illustration was inspired by a tiny village in Catalonia where we have a family house. We go there as often as we can and I'm really looking forward to some Spanish sunshine this year as just today the met office has announced that it's not going to be a 'barbecue' summer here as predicted but yet another wet, grey one, what a surprise!
